Bungee jumping is a recreational activity that involves jumping from a high surface while attached to an elastic cord. One end of this elastic cord is attached to the jumper’s body, while the other end is attached to a stationary object at the jumping point. Typically, bungee jumping involves leaping from jumping points that are several hundred feet or meters high. The elastic cord used in this activity is designed to stretch during the jumper’s fall and snap back up repeatedly. This causes the jumper to bounce up and down over the length of the jumping area until the energy from the jump has been depleted.
As you can imagine, there is much more to this sport than just grabbing a bungee cord, tying off and jumping. Physics and math are required to ‘design’ the jump so that the jumper’s head comes within a foot or so of terra firma, while at the same time, the bungee cord has reached its maximum extension and starts to pull the jumper back up. Beyond the physics and math, it is highly recommended that the jumper be in great physical shape and either be an expert at setting up the jump or be closely supervised by an expert.
Bungee Jumping originated on the Pacific island of Pentecoste, where for centuries the Venuatuan natives tested their manhood by leaping from bamboo towers with vines tied to their ankles. Documented by National Geographic photographer Kal Muller in 1970, the phenomenon came to the United States in 1979, when four members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge on elastic, latex cords. Following A. J. Hackett’s infamous jump from the Eiffel Tower in 1987, professionally operated bungee jumping facilities have flourished both in America and abroad.
Today bungee jumping attracts thousands of American thrill-seekers each year.
