Planning Your Backpacking Trip

September 1st, 2007 · No Comments

Having a great backpacking trip means making sure you’ve prepared for the journey and packed what you need. Hopefully you don’t realize on the trail you’ve forgotten something, essential or not.

Some of those little “luxuries” make a trip memorable. Special snacks, gourmet foods, a backpacker’s hammock. The list goes on. Some musicians have found that their ocarina adds sparkle to their trip. An ocarina is a palm sized flute that can be easily carried in a pocket or pack. Other musicians find harmonicas a fun campfire diversion.

For those who enjoy true survival expeditions, an ultra light backpacking trip might be just the thing. Many individuals who enjoy backpacking tours are trying to cut down on bulky equipment and opting for expeditions that test their ability to live in the wild. Check the weight of everything you’ll want to carry and bring only the most essential gear. That doesn’t mean you have to do without many items. Shelter, for example, can come from bivy sacks as opposed to backpacking tents and instead of heavier food, ultra light backpacking packages of dried foods can serve the purpose.

While a backpacking tour that may be a major expedition is likely to have you preparing for emergency situations, even a lightweight backpacking trip for an afternoon requires basic safety gear. Be prepared. There’s always the chance that you become lost or injured on the trail backpacking… and you want to make sure you have survival essentials handy. Bring matches, fire starter, a compass, water, food, and a whistle on all your backpacking trips.
